Influenced by conceptual minimalism, Atsushi Ohashi started his career as a sculptor with his first solo show in Tokyo in 1982. He gradually shifted his artistic and philosophical interest to two-dimensional media and figurative painting. He has concentrated on traditional oil painting since 2002, adopting people on the subway in New York City as his primary theme. He had the first solo show in the New York City titled "Waiting for the G Train" at the Williamsburg Library Gallery in 2007. "Waiting for the L Train" at Tenri Cultural Institute of New York Gallery in 2014 and Blue Gallery in the midtown in 2019. His major group exhibition was at NUUREart founded by Mr. George J. Robinson in 1998.
He was one of the selected artists in New York. A permanent exhibit of his 10 paintings was on display at the Benjamin Art Gallery in the Lower East Village from 2018 through 2000. A resident of Bushwick Brooklyn, he exhibits his paintings in the city and continues to add to his series "Waiting for the L Train" and "New York People on the Grass."
An artist with more than 30 years of experience in New York and Tokyo, Ohashi's work has been published in art books and magazines in both the U.S. and Japan, including New York Art World, Art in America, and Contemporary Artists in Japan. In addition, he taught sculpture at the prestigious Tokyo National University of Fine Art and Music from 1989 to 1994, where he previously received his master’s degree. Currently, he enjoys teaching art classes and workshops to children and adults throughout New York City.
